The illustrated Lincoln

An assignment I regularly make in a course on contemporary social studies involves analyzing an illustration of Abraham Lincoln using Walter Werner’s seven ways of reading visual texts.

More on Werner on reading visual texts below

Werner's article is here

The materials for this assignment are drawn from campaign literature, periodicals, and other assorted miscellanea, including political campaign literature from HarpWeek and political prints from the Library of Congress (search Lincoln)

As background, I suggest that students read Bunker’s article on Lincoln as portrayed in a 19th century publication called Comic News
Bunker, Gary L., The Comic News, Lincoln, and the Civil War. Journal of the Abraham Lincoln Association17.1 (1996): 39 pars. 14 Sep. 2009 http://www.historycooperative.org/journals/jala/17.1/bunker.html

The assignment is to write an analytical essay that includes an analysis of one illustration using Werner’s seven categories for reading visual images as presented by Werner.

Students from 2009 and 2010 posted their responses here
